New MGMT

Posted by Aleksander Vindenes Dahl on February 9th, 2010

MGMT has finally announced the date of the release of their second full-length. They had massive success with their first, but I’m a bit hesitant in my excitement about the second. As Vampire Weekend showed me with their last, trends change very fast nowadays and only a two-year gap still means a radical change would probably be needed to keep thing fresh. Vampire Weekend almost managed, but stumbled a bit. Will MGMT do the same? April 13th will show.

Even though Vanwyngarden states to spinn.com that “it’s definitely going to shock people”, I’m still in doubt if such a massive commercial success will be able to, and given the room to actually do just that.

The album is, according to Vanwyngarden, very much inspired by surfing, except for a few songs. “Lady Dada’s Nightmare” is an homage to Lady GaGa and the title track, “Congratulations”, will deal with the world economic crisis.

I just hope I’m wrong with my initial scepticism, because their first really “rocked” (in an psychedelic, indie kinda way).
