After visiting Rough Trade in London I came across this new act (to me anyways) described as beautifull and ghostly with fragile, hushed vocals and I immediately came to think of personal favourite Lykke Li. So I snatched a copy unlistened.
And I didn’t regret it. Listening to Holly Miranda’s “The Magician’s Private Library” I immediately fell in love with a couple of tracks. The opener “Forest Green Oh Forest Green” starts of with a kinda cheesy jingle-ish bleepy melody and builds up to full-on truimpets and saxophone maximalism. My comparison to Lykke Li fails after the first 10 seconds. Where Lykke’s minimalist composition contrasts to her fragile vocals with a certain avant garde-pop flair, Holly Miranda backs her beautifull vocals with a more grandiose and fuller sound, more reminecent to Bat for Lashes.

Beeing brooklyn based (they seem to all be) she got a helping hand from fellow brooklynian Dave Sitek of TV On The Radio which you can clearly hear on my second imeditely loved track, ‘Waves’.

The third loved track from Holly Miranda is not actually on the album, but is featured on the Rough Trade exclusive EP (Album of the month exclusive bonus disc). It’s a cover of Lauryn Hills soultastic ‘Ex-Factor’, and it is amazing. Holly’s voice really comes out in this and will put a smile on anyones face. She definitely has the x-factor.
