Sneak Peak

Posted by Magnus Vindenes Dahl on April 6th, 2010

2010 has been pretty good so far, musicwise. Cool disco cuts from Lindstrøm, Chilly synth pop from Beach House, dancy electro from Two Door Cinema Club and unpretensious pop from Ellie Goulding ++. But its only the beginning of april and there are still tons of acts to look forward to. Here are some of the things to look out for.

Sigur Ros Frontman Jónsi, or Jón Þór Birgisson if you might, has been feeding us tracks from his solo album “Go” the last couple of months. He seems to continue on the path where he left Sigur Ros. The icelandic sound filled with beautifull melodies and grand orchestrations seems to dominate even this time. But we didn’t wish for anything else. “Go” is due April 6th and if you didn’t noticed his lyrics are in english (mostly) and not the fantasy language that is Sigur Ros’.

Jónsi — “Go Do”

And why not make a whole album based on the former first lady of the Phillipines, Imelda Marcos? David Byrne & Fatboy Slim thought it was a great idea. It was such a good idea that they invited a shitload of artists to perform on the album (Each track has a new vocalist). Artist like Florence Welch (Florence + the mahine), Santigold, Roisin Murphy, Sharon Jones and Cindy Lauper +++ stepped up to the challenge. This might be the coolest album so far in 2010 but we’ll have to wait until April 8th to find out if “Here Lies Love” really is.

Well you have probably downloaded or heard this ages ago. But its sill worth a mention because it look to be a solid second album from MGMT. Congratulations is out April 13th.

MGMT — “Flash Delirium”

Caribous Odessa has been around for quite a while. The canadian is set to release “Swim” April 20th to follow up his 2007 album “Andorra”. And after listening to “Odessa” I’m definitely gonna keep an eye out for this guy.

Caribou — “Odessa”

Bianca “Coco” and Sierra “Rosie” Casady made a very memorable last record. “The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn” was, in one word, playful. The new one, “Grey Oceans” is out on May 11th and the key elements seem to still be there. The unique vocals and the childish approach to instruments looks to still be very prominent.

CocoRosie — “Lemonade”

Techno rockers Holy Fucks second albumLP was a real punch in the face of an album. An aggressive, loud and noisy experience that put your soundsystem to the test. Their third album called “Latin” is due May 11th and you can download the first single titled “Latin America” from their website. Don’t be put of by the latin reference, it doesn’t mean Holy Fuck has gone all Salsa. It just means they gone more epic and more noisy.

Holy Fuck — “Latin  America”

“High Violet”, the fifth LP from brooklyn band The National will be in store May 10th. Last time around, with “Boxer” in 2007, they delivered a solid 12 track peice of melancholy moods and complex emotions conveyed through captivating drumming and clever, sombre vocals. Expectations are high before the next one, and judging by “Bloodbuzz Ohio”, it doesnt seem like they have changed it up too much.

The National — “Bloodbuzz Ohio”

James Murphy and LCD soundsystem are set to headline a bunch of festivals this summer. He did a pretty cool Alan Vega cover late 2009 and now the first single “Drunk Girls” is all over the blogosphere.  There is no need to think Murphy is going to fail this time around. The album is called “This is Happening” and is out May 17th.

LCD Soundsystem — “Drunk girls”

The Band of Horses are to release their third album “Infinite Arms” on May 18th. As a treat, they relesed the video for the second track on the album “Compliments” which you can see below.

Band Of Horses — Compliments

Australian Sia Furler got her first big break back in 2004 when her beautifull single “Breath Me” became a must have tune for all TV-series known to man, including the final episode of Six feet under. What a kick start. But from there she struggled to really make a stir in the music world. It seems she has ditched Starbucks label Hear Me to find new inspiration.

Sia — “Clap Your Hands”

Favourite swedish robot-pop fetishist Robyn is working hard and plans to release two albums this year. The first album will be out sometime in june and  the second “Sometime after the summer”. The first, for-now-untitled, is rumoured to be a more uptempo dancy record. Its also said to be collaborations with artists such as Diplo and Royksopp. Expect quirky synth heavy electro-pop.

Robyn — “Fembot”
